Auto glass claims are covered by the comprehensive portion of your insurance policy. Here is how that coverage works under Colorado law.

Chip and Crack Repairs

  • Most insurance companies will waive your deductible and pay for minor repairs to your windshield.

  • Any windshield damage in the driver's direct line of sight cannot be repaired, since repair work does not make the damage completely disappear.

  • Insurance companies will not pay for repairs to cracks longer than 6" long, they recommend replacement instead.

Glass Replacement

  • Insist on getting an original equipment brand of glass made by one of the suppliers to the automakers.  This glass is stronger than most aftermarket brands, and costs you and the insurance company nothing more.
  • Unlike on repairs, no insurance company will waive your deductible to replace any piece of glass on your vehicle.
  • Insurance companies will pay for new window tinting if you had it on the glass prior to it breaking.
  • A severely pitted windshield is a safety hazard that can be replaced through your insurance.  The glass does not in fact have to be broken.

The Claims Process

  • Auto glass claims are generally straightforward.  Most insurance claims processors will want to know the date the damage occurred, and whether you are holding someone else responsible for it.
  • The majority of auto glass claims are processed by a third party company, not by your insurance company.   Unfortunately, some of these companies are actually owned by a competing glass install business like Safelite and Elite, and might try to steer you into only using their shop.
  • If you call in a glass claim yourself, insist on getting an Original Equipment brand of glass, and getting the work done at a shop that follows the AGRSS process.

Other Important Information

  • At A Better Windshield, you are only responsible for your deductible, with no hidden charges. We provide a national warranty  guaranteeing our work as long as you own the vehicle.
  • Under Colorado law, consumers have the right to decide which glass shop they want to use. Your insurance company, or their claims company, cannot require you to go to a particular place.
